Fly Tying Class Instruction

During fall and winter, Dennis travels the Midwest with his Close-Up Video Tying Theater conducting classes and seminars on tying.  The heart of the theater is a professional digital camera with close-lenses and a large flat screen monitor.  This system magnifies even the smallest flies so that every tier in the group can see the fly in great detail.  Utilizing this unique system, Dennis has conducted classes with as many as twenty students and delivered lectures to audiences of more than a hundred. Check out our events section to see where Dennis is scheduled next.

Enrollment fees include all of the tying materials in kit form, even specialty threads. During the full day Patterns and Techniques Class (about five hours of tying), students can expect to tie five patterns.  Dennis typically works through each pattern three times. First, Dennis ties a pattern while everyone watches. He then repeats the pattern, one step at a time, while students follow along and finally, students tie the pattern on their own as Dennis fields questions or lends a hand as needed.

Because hands-on instruction with a large group is impractical, classes are designed for the intermediate to advanced tier.  Students should come to class with fundamental materials-handling skills and the ability to tie a basic dry fly.

In addition to being a skilled and experienced instructor, Dennis is just plain entertaining. “Rivergod” Potter refuses to let class get boring or too quiet. How on earth does he get away with a nickname like Rivergod? Because while students are improving their tying skills, Dennis keeps them laughing.  There’s nothing like it. Come see for yourself.
